Pinecone Bird Feeders

A Sweet Treat for the Birds

Hello, my nature-loving friends! 🌿

Sometimes the simplest projects turn out to be the most delightful—especially when they involve spending time outdoors and caring for the little creatures right outside our front door.

This spring, we’ve had three birds nesting on our front porch. Naturally, my kids decided that what we really needed was a bird feeder—specifically, a special gift for the Daddy birds (because the mamas have enough on their plates!).

So, we rolled up our sleeves and made one of the easiest bird feeders you can imagine. And the best part? It’s as fun to make as it is for the birds to enjoy.

✂️ What You’ll Need:

  • A large, open pinecone
  • Ribbon or twine for hanging
  • Peanut butter (or sun butter for a nut-free option)
  • Birdseed
  • A butter knife or spoon
  • A plate or shallow dish

🪶 How to Make a Pinecone Bird Feeder:

  1. Tie the Ribbon
Find a nice, sturdy pinecone and tie a ribbon or piece of twine securely around the top for hanging later.
  2. Spread the Peanut Butter
Use a butter knife or spoon to coat the pinecone’s scales with peanut butter. Get into all those little spaces so the birdseed sticks well.
  3. Roll in Birdseed
Pour some birdseed onto a plate or shallow dish. Roll the pinecone in it until it’s covered on all sides.
  4. Hang and Enjoy
Find a tree branch, porch hook, or shepherd’s hook outside your window and hang your creation. Then, sit back and watch the feathery visitors arrive.

🌿 Why I Love This Project

Making these with my kids reminded me that joy doesn’t have to be complicated. A pinecone, a little peanut butter, and some birdseed can turn into a thoughtful gift for our feathered neighbors—and a reason for us to gather by the window and watch the life happening right outside our home.

If you haven’t made a pinecone bird feeder in years (or ever!), I encourage you to give it a try. It’s a small act of kindness for the birds and a big dose of fun for your family.

Here’s to happy birds, happy kids, and a heart full of gratitude for the beauty in nature.

Feathers and friendship,
Aimee 🐤💛
