Hand-painted Lettering That Lasts
When vinyl letters won’t do.

🎨 Painted Lettering That Lasts (and Won’t Peel Off!)
You know what I love about painted lettering? Once it’s there—it’s there. No peeling, no cracking, no “oops, that vinyl didn’t stick right.” Just a pretty, permanent touch you can enjoy for years (and paint right over if you ever change your mind!).
Here’s the fun and simple way I’ve been doing it—straight from my high school art teacher, who learned it from her father, a sign painter. I guess you could say this technique has been passed down like a good family recipe… only instead of biscuits, you get beautiful letters on your pantry door.
🪞 Here’s What You Do!
- Print Your Lettering
Pick the font you love on your computer and print it out. Isn’t it pretty already? - Flip & Shade
Turn your paper over and rub a pencil all over the back of your letters until the whole area is covered in graphite. Don’t worry about perfection—just make sure the letters are filled. - Tape & Trace
Tape your paper in place on your surface (door, wall, sign—whatever your project is). Using a ballpoint pen, press slightly hard and trace over each line and curve of the letters. When you’re done, remove the paper and you’ll have a perfect graphite transfer ready to paint. - Paint Away
Using a thin brush and black acrylic paint (my favorite), carefully fill in each letter. Take your time—this step is all about patience and a steady hand. But trust me… if I can do it in about 30 minutes, you can too!
Why I Love This Method
I’ve used this technique on my pantry door, my laundry room, and even the bathroom door (which is a pocket door—so now guests know what’s behind it without me leaving it open all the time). Unlike vinyl lettering, it doesn’t peel. And if I ever want to change it, I just remove it with a little paint thinner and repaint like nothing ever happened.
It’s simple, quick, and gives your home that thoughtful, custom touch. Plus—it’s fun!
If you try this, send me a picture. I’m always looking for clever ideas around the house… and something in my laundry room might be next.
Happy painting, friend! May your letters be straight, your hand steady, and your paint never, ever peel.
