While the Boat Is Rocking
To The One In The Middle of the Storm

While the Boat Is Rocking
This morning, as I knelt in prayer, I heard myself whisper these words without even realizing I was going to say them:
“Lord, keep me in Your perfect peace while the boat is rocking.”
And it stopped me in my tracks.
How many times do we beg God to calm the storm, to hush the winds, to make it all stop? But what if He doesn’t? What if, instead, He invites us to rest in Him—even while the waves are crashing?
Peace Isn’t Found in Calm Waters
In that quiet moment of prayer, I remembered the story in Mark 4 where Jesus and His disciples were caught in a furious storm. The boat was filling with water, the wind was howling—and Jesus?
He was asleep.
“A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.”
— Mark 4:37–38a (ESV)
I used to think that story was about Jesus waking up and rebuking the storm (and yes, He did). But now, I see something deeper.
The real miracle wasn’t just the stillness of the sea. It was His peace in the middle of it. Jesus didn’t need perfect circumstances to have perfect peace. And if He lives in us, then we don’t either.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
— Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
To the One in the Middle of a Storm
Maybe today you’re facing waves of your own:
- A child who’s wandered far from the path you prayed over.
- A marriage that’s lost its tenderness and feels like it’s barely holding on.
- A bank account that doesn’t match the needs piling up on the kitchen counter.
I’ve been there. And maybe you have too—white-knuckling the edge of the boat, wondering if you’ll make it.
But sister, the peace of God isn’t found in control. It’s found in trusting the One who commands the wind and waves.
“And He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
— Mark 4:39 (ESV)
Whether He calms the storm or calms you in the storm, His peace is available. It’s not something we earn—it’s a gift He gives when we stay near.
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
— John 14:27 (ESV)
Rest Like He Did
Jesus didn’t panic in the boat. He didn’t scramble or stress. He rested, fully confident in the Father’s goodness and authority.
Today, I’m asking Him to teach me to do the same. Not to strive. Not to fix it all. Just to rest in Him—even when it’s hard. Even when the boat is rocking.
So if you’re in deep waters right now, know this: you’re not alone. He’s in your boat. He sees you. And He hasn’t forgotten how to speak peace.
Isn’t it amazing how we tend to find Jesus in the deep.
Let’s stop begging for calm and start asking for trust. His presence is the safest place in the storm.
With you in this,
Aimee
